Xabi Alonso Shares Thoughts on Europa League Final
Coach Xabi Alonso says that it will be a “historic” occasion if Bayer 04 Leverkusen ends their UEFA Europa League campaign on an unbeaten note.
With a run of 51 games without defeat in all competitions, the German outfit are putting their record on the line when they face off against Atalanta BC in the Europa League final tomorrow night, Wednesday 22 May.
In an interview with UEFA (published on their website on Monday, 20 May), Alonso expressed his excitement about the upcoming match and what it would mean for Leverkusen to not only win the final, but also finish the season undefeated.
“It would be historic. It would be something written in golden letters, not only in the history of our club, but probably all European football. I hope we can,” he said.
The 42-year-old Spaniard also acknowledged that Atalanta will be a “demanding” opponent, but he is confident in his team’s abilities to come out on top at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland.
“We are going to play based on our ideas, our game and our enthusiasm to hopefully win, but to compete as we are doing. We know Atalanta well, and there are no secrets; they will know us well, too, and then hopefully, the game will be a good one.”
